Privacy Policy

The Rate Guide ("we," "us," or "our") operates therateguide.com. This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.

By using this site, you agree to this policy. If you do not agree, please stop using the site.

What We Collect

We collect the following types of data:

  • Account data — If you create an account: your email address and a hashed password (via Supabase authentication).
  • Profile data — If you save a profile: your discipline, experience level, location tier, current rate, target rate, and whether you carry your own equipment kit.
  • Rate history — If you use the dashboard: a log of your saved rate calculations.
  • Anonymous calculator events — When you use the calculator, we log your discipline, experience, location, calculated day rate, and whether the result was below market floor. This data is anonymous and not linked to your account.
  • Email address — If you choose to email your results to yourself.
  • Usage data — Page views and custom events tracked by Vercel Analytics (anonymous, privacy-preserving).

We do not collect payment information. The calculator and rate guides are free. The contract pack is sold through Gumroad, which has its own privacy policy.

How We Use Your Data

  • To provide the calculator and rate tools
  • To save and restore your rate scenarios across sessions (account holders)
  • To send your calculation results to your email address if requested
  • To understand which disciplines and markets are most used (aggregate, anonymous data)
  • To improve the site and add new features

We do not sell your personal data. We do not use it for advertising.

Third-Party Services

We use the following services to operate the site. Each processes data on our behalf:

  • Supabase — Database and authentication. Stores account data, profile data, and rate history. Data is stored on AWS infrastructure in the US. Supabase Privacy Policy
  • Vercel — Hosting and analytics. Logs page views and custom events. Vercel Privacy Policy
  • Resend — Transactional email. Used to send calculator results to your email if requested. Resend Privacy Policy
  • Cloudflare Turnstile — Bot protection on the email form. Cloudflare processes a challenge token but does not track users. Cloudflare Privacy Policy
  • CMS Health Insurance Marketplace API — Used to look up health insurance premiums by ZIP code. Only your ZIP code is sent; no personal data is stored by this service.

Cookies and Tracking

We use session cookies required for authentication (if you are logged in). We do not use advertising cookies or behavioral tracking cookies.

Vercel Analytics collects anonymous page view data. It does not use cookies and does not track individual users across sessions.

Your browser's localStorage is used to save calculator scenarios on your device. This data never leaves your browser and is not transmitted to our servers.

Data Retention

Account data is retained as long as your account is active. You may request deletion at any time by emailing hello@therateguide.com.

Anonymous calculator events are retained indefinitely to power aggregate benchmarks. This data cannot be linked back to you.

Email addresses collected for results delivery are stored in our database. You may request removal at any time.

Your Rights

For EU / EEA residents (GDPR):

  • Right to access — request a copy of your personal data
  • Right to correction — request correction of inaccurate data
  • Right to deletion — request deletion of your personal data
  • Right to data portability — request your data in a portable format
  • Right to object — object to processing of your data

For California residents (CCPA):

  • Right to know what personal information we collect and how we use it
  • Right to deletion of personal information
  • Right to opt out of sale of personal information — we do not sell personal information
  • Right to non-discrimination for exercising your privacy rights

To exercise any of these rights, email hello@therateguide.com with "Privacy Request" in the subject line. We will respond within 30 days.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided data to us, email hello@therateguide.com and we will delete it.

Security

We use industry-standard security practices including encrypted data transmission (HTTPS), hashed passwords, and access controls. Supabase stores data with encryption at rest. No system is perfectly secure; use a strong, unique password for your account.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the site evolves. Material changes will be noted at the top of this page with a revised date. Continued use of the site after changes constitutes acceptance.
